「貓」作為歌舞劇首次演出是在1981年5月11日。
地點是在倫敦西頭的新倫敦劇院，從此在英國一炮而紅!
「貓」憑著難以被打破的票房成績，
成為英國有史以來最成功、連續公演最久的音樂劇。
1982年「貓」開始在全世界的舞台劇聖地，美國紐約的百老匯大街上公演﹔
到2000年夏天停演，早已打破了百老匯連續公演最久、
而且也是次數最多的記錄。
直到現在，「貓」仍在倫敦西頭公演﹔
除此之外，「貓」也是美國最長的巡迴演出的劇目，
到目前為止至少已經有四次全美巡迴演出的紀錄。
「貓」曾獲得七項東尼獎(Tony，可以說是舞台劇界的奧斯卡獎)包括最佳歌劇。
而「回憶」則成為現代音樂中的經典，這一首歌曾被錄製過六百次之多﹔
演唱者包括世界聞名的歌手Barbara Streisand, Barry Mantilow和Judy Collins.
